BILLY THE KID TAKES ROUND 2 SPRING
FLING
By: T W Maynard
Sparta, TN (April 16-17) - With GMRP round #2 series
offering $7500 to win purse, drivers began rolling into
the pits Friday afternoon. With mother nature fully
cooperating with officials, qualifying began with Vic
"The Thrill" Hill qualifying his #1 on the
pole of the first heat with a fast time of 14.383 to
earn him the $100 fast cash from K & J Engine
Solution. As Hill would take the heat win to earn him
the pole position for Saturday nights feature event.
Heat #2 winner, #116 Randy Weaver would have the outside
starting position. As drivers came back on Saturday for
round 2, the line up would be posted by the way they
finished the heats on Friday night.
The green flag would fly as #116 Randy Weaver of
Crossville, TN. Would look to have more forward bite as
he pulled out front coming out of turn two to show the
way. #1 Vic Hill, #201 Ogle, Jr, #2 White and #37
Randolph in tow as this line up would stay until lap 18
as #2 Anthony White looped around in turn two moving #14
J. Bird Marlin into the top five. As the laps added up,
tires began showing up as on the last 20 laps problems
with some going off with flats were #1 Hill, #5 Hendrix
and #53 Pittman on lap 68. With #116 Weaver still
showing the way until lap 71. Weaver began to slow down
on the back straight as the caution flew, moving #201
Billy Ogle, Jr to lead the four lap shoot out. As the
green came out "Billy the Kid" would run the
remaining four laps into Victory Lane to earn the $7500
purse. Ogle would state tire was the key to the nights
run as he ran the hardest rubber he could get. Taking
second was #37 Scott Randolph of Baxter, TN for a good
showing. Third would go to #04 Perry Delaney of Sparta,
TN as he came from 17th starting position after having
problems in Friday nights race. #49 Jeff Walker of
McMinnville, TN worked hard from 15th starting position.
#25 John Llewyn would bring home a top five spot for his
first trip to GMRP. The remaining top 10 line up is as
follows: #4 Marvin Cagle (Brownsboro, AL), #11B Stacy
Boles of Clinton, TN who had started dead last after
losing his motor on Friday and replaced it at the track
on Saturday to make a seventh place finish. #1 Vic Hill
worked back up through the field after going off early
with a flat but overall had a good night as he would
stay on the ground and leave happy with an eighth
finish. Ninth and tenth would go to #5 Bryan Hendrix of
Knoxville and #2 Anthony White of Clinton, TN. The
remaining field of 11th - 21st was: #53 Arville Pittman
, #76 Fred Flatt, #116 Randy Weaver, #1 Terry Coleman,
#14 J. Bird Marlin, #5 Chris Wilson, #3D Donnie Gatts,
#17 Jody Coltrane, #4 Mark Vineyard, #5 Michael England,
#7 Dave Huff.
Open Wheels began qualifying on Friday night for the
Saturday 25-lap feature as #4 Ricky Arms of Moss, TN
took the $100 fast cash from Auto Zone of Cookeville
along with the winners purse. From the pole position
Arms led the field flag to flag to roll into Victory
Lane followed by #1 Michael Asberry of Crossville, TN,
#00 Stanley Donohoo of White Pine, TN, #25 Skimp Henry
of Newport, TN, #1W Joey Whittenburg of Crossville to
complete the top five.
Chevettes - With only 3-laps on the board, the #6 of
Ron Dodson of Sparta came out of turn two and flipped on
its top. Track officials worked to get the car back on
its wheels as Dodson exited the track to make it an
early night. The final lap had #3M Brian Leyhew of
Milton, TN taking the checkered flag followed by #69
Howard Duke, #13 Jason Qualls of Sparta, #1 Don Pollard,
#22 Tony Lewis and #25 Michael Cantrell of Sparta, TN.
Mini Stocks - Another group of Sparta drivers to make
the top five finish as #65 Todd Spivey takes the win in
front of his dad in the #1 David Spivey. Behind them was
#A1 Pee Wee Howard, #8 Derrick Hutchings and #17 Mike
Howard.
Cruisers - #31 Scott Proffiff with Jeff Proffitt on
the gas flew their Tbird into the winners circle in
front of #39 Barbara Turner and Yolanda Heuser on the
gas, #18 Kerry Houston and Jimmy Garrison on the gas,
#69 Denny Scott and Johnny York on the gas and #01 Chris
Cole and gas man Bryan Buckner making the top five

R J SPRINGS THE WIN AT GMRP
By: T W Maynard
Sparta, TN (April 2-3) - The first annual "Spring Fling Race" at Golden Mountain Raceway Park began with fast Friday night action as track officials would have the track surface very tacky. With 35 Super Late
Models on hand to go for the #7500 to win on Saturday night, it showed to be a fast night as 13 drivers would qualify in the 14 second range on the 3/8 mile Super Dirt Speedway. A new track record would be set by
five different drivers with #116 Randy Weaver of Crossville breaking his old record with a new time of 14.227 to earn the $100 "Fastest Cash Award" paid by K & J Engine Solutions of Cookeville. Other record breakers
were #19 Greg Johnson, #3 Steve Smith, #90 Mark Martin and #15 Patrick Duggan.
After all qualifying was complete, the three heat races would be barn burners as the top six finishers out of the heats would get 'locked in' to the Saturday night 75-lap feature. The Baxter Bullet #90 Mark Martin
of Baxter, TN qualified the fourth fastest to earn a seat on the front row of heat #1 where he would set sail at the green to take the win that earned him the pole position for the feature event. The outside set
would go to the heat #2 winner #19 Greg Johnson of IN and the 3 rd heat winner was #5 Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, as his second row starting position would prove to be the right place at the right
time. Saturday April 4 came with the top 18 locked in and with some Super Late Models not showing up, the field of 28 SLM were all put into the feature.
With everyone in position, the first car to exit before the green would drop was the #25 of Shane Canton of Locust, GA losing an engine. The show begun with the green coming out as #90 Martin and #19 Johnson would
go side by side into turns 1 & 2, skating up the racetrack and leaving the bottom door open for #5 Johnson to tuck under them to show the way out front. Martin and Johnson would continue to battle side by side bumper
to bumper the first 10 laps as #20 Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN would root in on their bumpers a few laps. Cautions would come and go until on lap-18 Mark Martin exited with smoke coming out from under the #90 hood.
#201 "Billy the Kid" Billy Ogle, Jr exited with a broken shock on lap-20. Hard racing would go on back through the field as a lot of side by side action went on. As the laps counted off to lap-65 as the #5 Johnson,
working lap traffic, allowed the #19 Johnson to get on and beside him as they came out of turn four #5 Johnson would again set sail to run the remaining 10 laps. #19 Johnson and #20 Owens continued doing battle the
last 5-laps leaving #5 Ronnie Johnson to earn the $7500 as #19 Greg Johnson held onto his 2 nd spot and #20 Jimmy Owens keeping 3 rd. #23 John Blankenship out of West Virginia raced hard and
worked for the fourth position for his first time on the GM track. Record holder #116 Randy Weaver brings home a top 5 position to show for as #16 Shawn Negangard started 10 th to finish 6 th
and the 11 th starter #4 Mark Vineyard took 7 th. The 'hard charger' award goes to the #18 Brandon Kinzer who started 23 rd to take 8 th back home to Prestonburg, KY. 9
th and 10 th positions was worked for by #37 Scott Randolph and #2 Anthony White. The remaining field lined up as follows: #49 Jeff Walker, #4J Jerry Bowersock, #11 David Laney, #76 Fred Flatt, #3D
Donnie Gatts, #15 Patrick Duggan, #9 Dusty Carver, #22 Mike Weeks, #14 Jay Bird Marlin, #53 Arville Pittman, #R11 Mike Ritchey, #04 Perry Delany, #201 Billy Ogle, Jr, #90 Mark Martin, #1X Matt Barrett, #3 Steve
Smith, #5 Mike England, #25 Shane Clanton.
OPEN WHEEL Action was a good one as #00 Stanley Donahoo was the fastest qualifier to start on the pole as he ran flag to flag for the win. Donahoo didn't have a ride in the park as #20 Jimmy Owens dogged him
almost every lap to come up short at the end to take 2 nd. #11F Mark Ford kept it interesting as he stayed in the hunt. #10 Chad Ogle took fourth and 5 th went to #18 Brandon Kinzer. #15 Brad
Pounds, #1 Joey Whittenburg, #36 Billy Palmer, #4X Joe Cline and #25 Skimp Henry finished out the top 10.
MINI-STOCK $500 to win and Auto Zone, of Cookeville, paying $100 "Fast Bucks" to the fastest qualifier went home with #65 Todd Spivey of Sparta followed by #1 Brad Sain, #8 Derrick Hutchings, #A1 Pee Wee Howard
and #32 Herman Radke III.
STREET STOCK win goes to #20 Johnny Hughes as the line up behind him would be #61 Carl Voulker, #93 Clayton Forsyth, #02 John Cook and #81 Sam Profitt.
CRUISER division would be a wild ride as, at the end, #319 Josh Proffitt and Scott Brown made the pass on the last lap to take home the trophy. #31 Scott Proffitt & Jeff Proffitt set their T'Bird in 2 nd
as #39 Barbara Turner & Yolanda Hueser brought home third.
The two features ran on Friday night were the Limited Late Model with #70 Kenny Dyer taking the win and #3M Scott Shelton winning the Chevette Division.

Golden Mountain Speedway - March 10, 2004 ICEBREAKER SHOOTOUT AT GMRP
By: T W Maynard
Sparta, TN (March 5-7): The 1st Annual "Icebreaker Shootout" at Golden Mountain Raceway Park was a rainout the first night as qualifying had to be pushed out until Saturday afternoon with the shootout
unfolding on Sunday afternoon March 7. With 38 Super Late Models signed in to go for the $7500.00 purse, the fastest qualifier came out of Knoxville, TN as #201 "Billy the Kid" Billy Ogle, Jr ended with a fast
time of 15.080. Ogle also took home the $100 'Fastest Time' money from K & J Engine Solutions of Cookeville, TN. The 2nd fastest qualifier was #83 the "Silver Shark" of
Lawarenceburg, IN Scott James with a
time of 15.094. The 3rd fastest time was set by Greg Johnson of Harrodsburg, KY with a time of 15.389 and behind him was #3 Steve Smith of Powell, TN. With the first group of qualifying over, local hotshoes and drivers
from 7 states got ready for some fast and furious heat racing to determine how the top 16 drivers would be locked into the Sunday afternoon feature. The top 4 finishers out of the 4 heat races were assured a drivers seat
in the feature. The remaining finishers would run in two consi races. The top four finishers in heat 1 was #201 Billy Ogle, #19 Greg Johnson, #90 Mark Martin and #1 Vic Hill. Heat 2 top four was #3 Steve Smith, #83 Scott
James, #28 Dennis Erb, Jr and #2 Anthony White. Out of heat 3 came #10 Jay Brinkley, #5 Ronnie Johnson, #1 Duane Chamberlain and #9 Dusty Carver. The last heat of the night showed #53 Ray Cook, #15 Patrick Duggan, #23 Tim
Dameron and #57 Johnny Wheeler. With the top 16 drivers locked in, action would get started on Sunday with two consi races taking four from each one to go into the feature. Consolation #1 winner would be #116 Randy Weaver,
#31 Tony Morris, #63 Jared Terry and #11B Stacy Boles. Consi #2 added #14 Terry 'Jay Bird' Marlin, #16 Shawn

With 24 Super Late Models locked in to do battle for 75 laps and the big money of $7500 to win they hit the track. With the green coming out it would be Ogle and Smith going at it as Smith showed the way for Ogle,
Brinkley and Cook. As early laps added up #53 Ray Cook hooked his Dodge on the upper side of the race track and set sail as he took over the lead on lap 7. On lap 13 the first caution would fly as 22nd starter #53 Arville
Pittman of Sparta, TN would break something on his front right sending him into and up on the wall in turns 3 & 4 for what looked to be a wild ride for Pittman. After cutting Pittman's night short the pack went back
under green for only 3 laps as Marlin and Dameron got together. After only three more laps, the #2 of White would exit with mechanical problems. On lap 28, #31 Morris had problems and the #1 of Hill broke on lap 31. With
the #5 of Johnson looking strong every lap, he was running up through the field wide open as #83 James gets around Johnson on lap 32 as Johnson began reeling backward and brought out the caution on lap 37 with a flat tire,
sending him to the pits and returning to the rear, as any car that went off with a flat would do. With the new right rear rubber started to show as they worked up through the field, it looked as if Cook was the man as he
showed the way up front. Lap 57 would get #49 Jeff Walker and lap 58 ended James' night with problems as Smith, Ogle and Weaver going out for tires. As the laps climbed higher so did #15 Duggan as he reeled in Cook who was
working lap traffic. On lap 73 Cook got behind a lap car coming out of turns 3 & 4 and Duggan moved along side Cook to challenge him but as they went into turn 1, it would be #53 Ray Cook down the back straight away,
out front all the way to the checkered flag to take home the pay check in his Dodge from
Brasstown, NC. In high fashion the second place finisher would be #15 Patrick Duggan of Lenoir City, TN from his fourth row start.
#10 Jay Brinkley of Tullohoma, TN took third as he stayed in the hunt all day. Fourth and fifth respectively would go to #19 Greg Johnson of Harrodsburg, KY and hard charger #5 Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN.
