Shane
Clanton Tops 12 Annual Icebowl At
Talladega
Short
Track
EASTABOGA,
AL--The 12th Annual Icebowl weekend at Talladega Short Track once again
proved to be the hottest place in racing during the cold month of January
as race fans and over 300 drivers and crews braved frigid temperatures to
see Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, GA, in his Custom Race Engines/Rocket
chassis score the win in the Super Late Model portion of the Sunday
afternoon program.
Clanton started outside front row for the 50 lap main as
Spartanburg, SC., Jeff Cooke making his first Icebowl appearance started
on the pole, but never lead a lap as Clanton moved to the lead down the
backstretch with Lewisburg, TN., moving into the second spot Cooke third,
2002 SAS Champion Duayne Hommel fourth and Ross Martin fifth.
Clanton pulled out to a straightaway lead only to have Gentry start
to run Clanton down in traffic as the two started to battle for the top
spot.
Gentry took over the lead
and started to show his strength for the top spot as Clanton was now
getting pressure from Hommel and Clint Smith.
Following a caution period Clanton got another run on Gentry and
made his move to the front spot again took over the top spot, with Gentry
now falling back to second. The
duo pulled ahead of the third place Hommel and was starting to pull ahead
of the field, when Gentry moved back ahead of Clanton to take over the top
spot and at this points Gentry looked to be on his way to the $5,000 win.
A caution came out with four laps remaining and Gentry and Clanton
seemed to be the two that it was going to be a battle between, and with
three laps remaining Gentry slipped high coming off turn four and Clanton
made his move to the bottom and then pulled into the lead and went on to
claim his first Icebowl win. Gentry
