WINCHESTER SPEEDWAY
Winchester Speedway results from Nov. 15
After a season of promise and expectations that has not been what David Gentry is accustomed to (In other words; numerous victories), the "Lewisburg(TN) Lightning" returned to familiar territory in Saturday’s Fall Sizzler at Winchester, Tennessee and as he has done so many times through recent years at middle Tennessee tracks, Gentry set quick time with a 16.11 clocking and streaked to victory in the $3,000 to win Late Model race.
Forty nine Late Models went against the clock with Gentry’s 16.11 edging former Winchester Speedway champion Greg Skinner’s 16.13 mark. Fourteen LM’s were locked into the starting field as Trenton, Georgia’s Steve Gilbert was the fourteenth qualifier on time.
Eighteen late models were scheduled to start consy number one and while only fifteen actually took the green flag it was the "Boaz Bullet" Tim Busha that was an easy victor over Ronny Hollinsworth of Northport, Alabama. Murphy, North Carolina’s David Killian was third with 16 year old Dallas Cooper in fourth. Lamar Scoggins grabbed the final transfer spot in consy one. Consolation race number two saw TST veteran Ted Lackey drive away from the seventeen car field with Jeremy Taylor finishing second ahead of Corey Posey , Fred Flatt and Mike Head.
When the 40 lap feature finally got underway it was a multicar battle early on with Skinner, 2003 track Champion Jerry Ashley, Kevin Gibson, Shannon Davis and Randy Gifford all pushing Gentry. The "Shark" appeared to get together with Ashley and a cut tire ended the former champs run. Meanwhile Gifford was sliding backward with an ill handling race car and Davis exited on lap 12.
If you made the mistake of only focusing on the leaders you may have missed two great charges. Consy two winner Ted Lackey was flying through the field and by the half way mark was up to eight with 24th starting Mike Head on a tear of his own and riding 12th at the midpoint. By lap 30 the crowd was focused on Lackey as he and Perry Delaney, whom himself was having a fine run were in a battle for third and fourth with Lackey prevailing in lap 37. Ted’s charge came up short as the Alabama veteran flat ran out of time and would finish a close third behind Gentry and Ashley. Delaney grabbed fourth as another former track champion Jeff Walker was fifth, staving off the "Ellenwood(GA.) Express" Mike Head who finished 6th, passing 18 racers on his charge towards the front. It was a trio of Alabaman’s that finished seventh through ninth with Keith Hayes, Brandon Brown and Ronny Hollinsworth, while Scott Randolph was tenth.

The Mini Stock put on another nip and tuck show with heats winners Joe Burns and Michael Brown in an early duel for the point before Jason Todd finally slipped by both front runners. Once in front Todd held off a determined Joe Burns as the track record holder (18.64 on August 9, 2003) pushed the McMinnville native to the checkered flag. Todd was protested and a post race inspection found Todd’s Mustang to be legal. Point’s runner-up Stanley James pushed the leaders to the finish line with Earl Campbell and Joe Jernigan fourth and fifth.

O'Reilly Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series Press Release # 56
October 1, 2003
HOMMEL UNDERGOES SURGERY, NEW BENEFIT PLANS ANNOUNCED

Knoxville, TN --- Duayne Hommel, 25, of Newport, TN, a nationally known
dirt Late Model star driver, underwent surgery early Wednesday afternoon
in an ongoing effort to treat the young racecar driver who sustained
severe head injuries in a traffic accident on that occurred near
Newport, TN on September 23 at 8:00 PM. Hommel's condition has
consistency improved the past three days while more announcements have
been made regarding benefit projects to assist Hommel in defraying
substantial medical expenses.

"He was supposed to have surgery at 11:30 this morning but they
moved it to 12:30 PM this afternoon," stated Ron "Flea" Fleenor, family
friend and family spokesperson. "This morning he was moving his feet,
arms and head and is wanting the hell out of bed. They were put the
trach in and the feeding tube in his stomach today and everything went
great. All his gauges are 'still' good."

Fleenor's remarks came minutes after Hommel's surgery was
completed. Hommel is still in the Intensive Care Unit and only
yesterday, September 30, was upgraded from critical condition to serious
condition.

"Now it's been a three good days in a row," continued Fleenor.
"So I am going to ask everybody to keep doing what you've been doing
because it seems to be working pretty well at this point."

The outpouring of support and concern from the entire racing
community and industry, crossing the entire spectrum of motorsports, has
been tremendous.

Hommel was severely injured on Tuesday September 23 in a two car
accident near Newport. Hommel, who had just left his race shop and was
enroute to pick up his wife and son, was driving a Chevrolet Envoy when
he was forced to swerve to avoid and on-coming car as he crested a hill
on a two lane road. The vehicle Hommel was driving struck a ditch and
rolled five times, according to preliminary reports. Hommel suffered
severe head injuries and trauma.

Hommel, the defending Southern Allstars Series champion, was
airlifted to University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville, TN where he
is undergoing emergency medical treatment. He is currently in critical
condition with internal and external bleeding of the brain. He is
currently under the care of a team of surgeons and specialists and many
family members of friends are holding vigil at the hospital.

Fleenor also revealed that many fund-raising projects are
underway to help raise money for the star driver's medical expenses, as
well as updated information on existing projects.

"We had a slight change of plans but Carolina Performance and Kip
Cochran have got him a Mastersbilt chassis coming to raffle off," stated
Fleenor Wednesday afternoon. "The fellow helping put this deal together
with Kip is named Woody. They are putting everything together and build
the car at their shop. If someone wants to donate parts and get on the
car they need to call Kip. There is still a lot of stuff to be had and
(Hommel crew chief) Tommy (Hicks) is working on helping them get
everything for it."

The chassis will come from Keith & Tader Masters' Mastersbilt
Race Cars while other components have been donated by Brinn
Transmissions, Peterson Aluminum, Classic Powder Coat, Sweet
Engineering, Winters, Performance Friction, Quick Car Gauges, Powell
Pedals, Ultra Shield Belts, Oval Craft Seats and Poske Performance.
Addition donations will be announced later.

"We asked them (Masters brothers) and they said, hell yes, we're
in," said Fleenor. "Been that way with about everyone that's been asked.
If anyone would like to help out just give Kip a call."

The raffle tickets for the new Mastersbilt Race Car and
components are now available for $10.00 each. You can purchase the
raffle tickets by check or money order at: Carolina Performance, 1009
Bell Dowdle Road, Franklin, NC 28734. You can also order raffle tickets
by credit card by calling 828-369-2012. For additional information visit
the Carolina Performance website at:
http://www.dnet.net/jperry/carolinaperformance/home.html

Fleenor also revealed that a benefit golf tournament is being
planned for next month.

"It's still in the preliminary stages but 'Pup' Thomas of Hoosier
Tire is putting together a benefit golf tournament that will be held on
Friday November 21," said Fleenor. "It will be held at the Flagstone
Golf Course in Cleveland, TN."

Interested participants are encouraged to telephone Thomas at
Hoosier Tire at 865-970-3110.

There are several other projects in place to help raise needed
funds for Hommel and his family, which includes his wife, Christi, and
son, Daegan, and parents Junior and Gayla.

Among the new fundraising projects will be replicas of Duayne
Hommel's door from his #H2 Warrior Race Car and orders can be placed
immediately.

"We're going to be selling doors for $150 each," informed
Fleenor. "It may take a little bit to get them, like a couple weeks. So
if someone wants one call the race shop and we'll get a list of people
who want doors. Once we get it figured out how many ordered we'll go
from there."

Anyone interested in purchasing a #H2 racecar door can call the
Duayne Hommel Racing shop at: 423.613.5199.

Duayne Hommel Racing will also be raffling off a replica helmet with

Allstars Series point event.

"The helmet raffle will be given away at the last Southern Allstars

Southern Allstars souvenir trailer at their events and also at the
Xtreme Dirt Car Series souvenir trailer at their two remaining events."

SOUTHERN ALL STAR DIRT RACING SERIES DRIVER DUAYNE HOMMEL SERIOUSLY
INJURED

Newport, TN --- Dirt Late Model star Duayne "Hollywood" Hommel, 25, of
Newport, TN, was severely injured on Tuesday September 23 in a two car
accident near Newport.
The accident occurred at approximately
8:00 PM EST.

Hommel was airlifted to University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville,
TN where he is undergoing emergency medical treatment. He is currently
in critical condition with internal and external bleeding of the brain.
He is currently under the care of a team of surgeons and specialists and
many family members of friends are holding vigil at the hospital.

"We are just praying he comes out of this deal," stated Ron "Flea"
Fleenor, a family spokesman, from the University of Tennessee Hospital
early Wednesday morning. "If anyone can get through something like this
he can. If you give him a challenge he will step up to the plate. But
this is different, he is fighting for his life."

According to Fleenor upon possible recovery Hommel will likely have some
partial paralysis and possibly the loss of sight in one eye, according
to preliminary diagnosis.

Hommel is married to Christi and they have a son, Daegan Cole, 1.

6-29-03 - Changing of the Guard at Highland Rim Speedway

Ridgetop, TN, June 29  Highland Rim Speedway has long been known as Tennessee's Family Action Track.  There has been a changing of the guard at The Rim.
Track owners Ronnie and Pat Baucom recently sold the track to Larry and Laura Gerleve.  The Baucoms have owned and operated the track for 14 seasons of the 41 that the track has been in operation.  Their hard work and dedication has made Highland Rim Speedway what it is today.  In the past decade, the Baucoms renovated the track completely by expanding and repaving the track, enlarging the pit area, adding grandstands, erecting skyboxes, building new concession facilities, expanding restrooms and adding additional parking for both fans and drivers.   But most important of all of the above is the family type atmosphere they've maintained throughout the years.
Ronnie & Pat want to thank everyone who has visited Highland Rim "because it's the fans and drivers that really let people know where a "real race fan" can come and see the best stock car racing anywhere around."
Larry and Laura Gerleve intend to keep the family atmosphere going and welcome everyone out to The Rim.  NASCAR stars Bobby Hamilton, Bobby Hamilton, Jr., Casey Atwood, Jeremy Mayfield, Chad Chaffin, David Green, Jeff Green, Chase Montgomery have all taken to the high banks of The Rim.  They're excited about being a part of the rich racing history of the nationally known race track and being involved in the up and coming future stars of  NASCAR.
Highland Rim Speedway races every Saturday night from March to October at 7:00 p.m.

01-04-03 -  Atomic Motor Speedway under new ownership

Jim Varnell of Knoxville is the new owner of Atomic Motor Speedway. Varnell takes over the historic one-third mile dirt track that is well known across the country for its great 3-wide racing and excellent facilities. Located between Lenoir City and Oak Ridge, TN, Atomic has seen over 30 years of great racing where some of the biggest names in dirt racing have cut their teeth in the sport. Tootle Estes, J.T. Kerr, H.E. Vineyard, Skip Arp, Ronnie Johnson, and Billy Ogle, Jr. have driven many laps around the famed high bank track. Recent improvements include a state-of-the-art lighting system, an improved racing surface, new concession and restroom areas, and many other subtle improvements. Varnell is no stranger to racing in east Tennessee. Varnell owned Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville in the mid 90's and currently owns the I-40 Motorcross facility located next to Atomic.

The 2003 racing season will be a transition year for the speedway. No major changes are planned for the track. But the racing program will be slightly changed. The track will no longer conduct its weekly races under the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series umbrella. While NWRS was beneficial to Atomic and its racers, having no sanctioning for the weekly races will allow more drivers to compete at Atomic on a weekly basis. Also new for 2003, will be the addition of the super late models to the weekly lineup. Area fans and drivers have requested the super late models be added and they will be for 2003. The limited late models, modified streets, pure minis, and pure streets will be back to the Atomic lineup. Rules for all divisions will be released in the near future. A schedule, purse structure, and other information will be released as soon as everything is finalized.

Check back for updates as Atomic announces race dates and information for special events. The site will continually be updated from our old service to our new service. Please be patient with our web site during this transition. Atomic is dedicated in continuing to offer one of the best racing web sites.
